How it works
Theory first, then the radar.
Every rating has a written course and an exam behind it. You read, you take the exam, and only then do we pair you with a mentor. That order matters: it means your first session on a live position is spent building skill, not learning what a squawk code is.
Sit the exam
A timed written exam drawn from the course. Pass it and the tier is signed off.
Get a mentor
Once your theory is done you join the mentoring queue and get paired with a controller for practical sessions.
Take the rating
Your mentor works with you until you're ready for the exam on the live network.
On mentors
A mentor is not a teacher.
Mentors are volunteers who give up their own controlling time to sit with you. Their job is to turn what you already know into something you can do under pressure — not to teach you the syllabus from scratch, and not to keep you on task. That part is yours.
Come to a session having done the reading, with specific questions, and you'll get a great deal out of it. More on what to expect.
